100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know

If You Know These Words, You Must Know More....

When the editors of the American Heritage® Dictionaries assembled their list of 100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know, the response was overwhelming. The editors received so many requests to reproduce the list they decided to put it on the Houghton Mifflin website. The site has since been visited by hundreds of thousands of curious minds. This handy book includes valuable information about the words on the list that both prospecitive and retrospecitive graduates can put to good use.

The editors chose these words because they were challenging. They are the kind of words that a successful high school graduate can learn from rigorous coursework in a standard variety of subjects. At the same time, the words see regular use in newspapers, magazines, novels, media broadcasts, and many other places as well.

"The words we suggest," says senior editor Steven Kleinedler, "are not meant to be exhaustive but are a benchmark against which graduates and their parents can measure themselves. If you are able to use these words correctly, you are likely to have a superior command of the language."
