Using UniDict iOS Dictionary Applications


Tap on any letter to expand the view.

Tap on the up arrow in the tool bar to collapse the view.

Scroll up and down vertically or use the alphabet links on the right of the screen to quickly jump down to a particular letter.

Tap on an entry in the list to view the definition.


iPad Pro tip:

Drill down into the Index while on the move, using the "Two Thumb" navigation method. Hold the iPad in both hands and use your thumbs alternately to select the letter of the alphabet, then the second letter of the word, and then use the small scroll wheel to quickly scroll through the list if it is long.

When you get the hang of this, it is the fastest method of getting to a word.




Search

Use the keyboard to enter text into the Search field.

Searching begins as you type and will match whole words and also give partial matches.

If there are no matches, possible suggestions will be shown in a list. Not all definitions for words in this list will be included in the application, but this list is provided in order to suggest correct spellings.

Tapping the Search key will close the keyboard.

Tapping the "x" key will delete text in the "Search field".

Tapping the Cancel Key will also hide the keyboard.


iPhone/iPod Pro tip:

Shake your iPhone/ iPod to undo or redo input.


iPad Pro tips:

The search field is available from every view in the application.

Tap the search field to open the keyboard.

Alternatively, tap on the keyboard icon in the bottom right of the screen to open the keyboard.


Advanced Search

Wildcard searching is supported for when you are not sure of a spelling.

Use a ? character for a single unknown letter or the * character for multiple unknown letters.


e.g.:

tr?e
  ☞ tree, true

tr*e
  ☞ trace, trackage, ...


Search Settings

Tap on the Settings icon to open up the settings dialog.


Save Search Word

If this setting is ON, the previous search will be saved in the search field.

If this setting is OFF, each time you return to Search View, the search field will be empty.


Open to Search

If this setting is ON, each time you open the application it will open in Search View.


Search on Clipboard

If this setting is ON, each time you open the application, any words you have saved in your clipboard will be automatically inserted into the search field.

TIP - This feature works best when you copy a single word or phrase to the clipboard prior to opening the application.




Viewing Dictionary Entries

Headwords

All UniDict titles are linked together. Tapping on a headword in a UniDict dictionary title will automatically open up the same entry in a UniDict thesaurus (if installed). Or if you are in the thesaurus and tap on the headword, the dictionary defintion will open up.


Tappable Words

While viewing a dictionary entry, any word within the definition is tappable.

Tap a word to jump to the dictionary entry for that word. If the word is NOT in the dictionary, then the Search View will be shown with the tapped word in the text field.

Edit and initiate a new search or press the Back Key to return to the previous page.

Sounds

If a sound file is available for the entry, the following sound icon will be shown:

Tap this icon to play pronunciation.


Sounds Troubleshooting

If sound cannot be heard on your device, check to ensure it is not in "manner mode" (flip the switch on the top left side of the screen so that the red dot is NOT showing) and the volume is at an audible level.


Bookmarks

When viewing a dictionary entry, use the in the top right to save that entry as a bookmark. Add notes to this using the keyboard. In addition you can add bookmarks to custom folders. The Save button will add the entry to your bookmark list.



Bookmarks


View and/or edit the bookmark list by pressing the Bookmarks tab.


The bookmarks are saved in alphabetical order. You can delete multiple items in the list using the Edit button.

Or you can delete single entries by swiping the screen to the right of the entry.


Advanced Bookmark Features

Custom memos - add a memo to your bookmark

Custom folders - arrange your bookmarks in custom folders

Flashcards - drill yourself using the flashcard tools. Choose the word or or shuffle the items. Shake features to move to the next flashcard or drill down into the definition to review the entire entry.

Icon colours - choose between two colours for the bookmark icon - allows a further level of bookmark organisation

Export bookmarks - send an email with a text list of your bookmarks. Note - iCloud support is coming soon.



History

This is a list of your previously viewed entries with dates.

This list is generated automatically every time you view an entry. Use this to quickly return to a previously viewed definition.


Deleting Single Entries

Swipe your finger over the date stamp on the right side of the panel to reveal the Delete button.


Deleting Multiple Entries

Tap on the Edit button in the top left of the tool bar to reveal a single delete option for each entry or tap on the Clear All button in the top right of the tool bar to delete the entire list.




About Section

This section contains help files, cover art, appendices, etc. and settings.

This section has all of the copyright notices, Supplementary material, and cover art from the original text.

Also included are all of the help files and support contact information.



Settings


General Settings

It is possible to customize how the application operates depending on your personal preferences.


Save Search Word

If this setting is ON, the previous search will be saved in the search field.

If this setting is OFF, each time you return to Search View, the search field will be empty.

Note: tapping the x key will clear the text box.


iPhone/iPod Pro tip:

Alternatively, shake your device to clear/redo the text.


Open to Search (iPhone/iPod touch only)

If this setting is ON, each time you open the application it will open in Search View.

If this setting is OFF, each time you open the application, it will open at the last page you were viewing.


Search on Clipboard

If this setting is ON, each time you open the application, any words you have saved in your clipboard will be automatically inserted into the search field.


PRO TIP - This feature works best when you copy a single word or phrase to the clipboard prior to opening the application.


Language

This setting allows you to customize the language of the icons and navigation buttons. The default setting will respect the language setting of your device. However, if you want the buttons to be displayed in a different language, choose from the list and restart the application.

NOTE: This is only the language of the icons and other buttons in the application. The content inside the application will not be changed.

Use Link Menu

If this setting is ON, tapping on words within definitions will open up a contextual menu showing different navigation options including search, copy, share to popular social media accounts and links out to other compatible dictionary titles. This will allow you to jump to another title quickly to compare the definition in other dictionaries.

This is ON by default. Turning this off will remove all linking functionality from within defintion words to just searching. So tapping on a word in a definition will automatically start a search for that word. Or tapping a headword will jump to a thesaurus entry

iCloud Support

If this setting is ON, saved bookmarks, bookmark notes and custom bookmark folders can be backed up and restored either to the same device or to other devices that use the same iCloud account.

This is OFF by default.

Using the export menu in Bookmarks, you can backup and restore.

Clipboard Monitor

If this setting is ON, if you are in another application and you copy a word into the clipboard, a notification banner will appear at the top of the screen. Tapping this banner will automatically open up the dictionary at the copied word.

This allows you to easily jump into the dictionary and search on a word from another application such as mail, ebooks, safari etc.

This is OFF by default.

You can also access any saved words in the pull down notifications list from the main pages of the device.

TIP - only save single words into the clipboard.

Notifications are handled in the iOS settings application.


Specific Application Settings


Background

If this setting is ON, the background graphic will be shown in the Index and Search View of the application.

If this setting is OFF, the background will be plain white in all views of the application.


Text Display

If this setting is ON, each page will always show the larger font option if one is available.


NOTE:
the copyright notices and other peripheral text will stay at the default smaller size.




Special Information for Deluxe or Bundled Applications:


These keys in the top tool bar of the Index page toggle between Dictionary ⇔ Thesaurus areas of the application. Tapping on the headword in any definition also jumps between Dictionary ⇔ Thesaurus.


When in Search or About, these buttons indicate which area of the application you are currently searching. Tapping on this toggles between Dictionary ⇔ Thesaurus.




Miscellaneous

Navigating



Depending on which view you are in, one of these takes you back to your previous page.

There is only one level of "Back". Should you wish to review a previous search, use the History function.




Accessbility

VoiceOver

This application does support the use of VoiceOver. To enhance the functionality, please go to About > Settings and turn off the XYS option. This will allow VoiceOver to read out the definitions. However, linking from words within the definition cannot be used.
